Transportation

Questions:
What are some different types of transportation?

Read Alouds:
Down by the Station by Jennifer Riggs Vetter
My Little Train by Satomi Ichikawa
Sheep in a Jeep by Nancy Shaw
Moon Plane by Peter McCarty

Flannel Boards:
There Was a Bold Lady Who Wanted a Star by Charise Mericle Harper
The Crazy Traffic Light by Rob Reid

Vehicle Guessing Game
I have headlights and a steering wheel,
I take you near and far.
My horn says “Honk!” and my engine says “Vroom!”
Hop in! I am a... (car)

I pull my cars along the rails,
I chug through sun or rain.
My smokestack lets out a “Choo-choo!”
Hop aboard! I am a... (train)

I’ll take you soaring in the sky,
We’ll reach the clouds and soon!
I come in bright colors, with a basket for you.
Hop in! I am a... (hot air balloon)

I have two wheels and a handlebar,
And pedals you will like.
You can ride me down the road.
Hop on! I am a... (bike)

I have wings and an engine that roars.
My comfy cabins contain
Lots of seats where passengers sit.
Hop aboard! I am a... (plane)

I have a great big cab and a loud horn,
Big wheels so I won’t get stuck,
And a giant trailer to carry heavy loads.
Hop aboard! I am a... (truck)

This Little Train
This little train, painted black,
It comes chugging down the track.
With a “Choo-choo; Toot-toot,”
Hear the whistle blow.
This little train goes chugging home.

This little car, painted blue,
It has seats for me and you.
With a “Choo-choo; Toot-toot,”
Hear the whistle blow.
This little train goes chugging home.

This little car, painted yellow,
It shimmies and shakes like a bowl of Jell-O.
With a “Choo-choo; Toot-toot,”
Hear the whistle blow.
This little train goes chugging home.

This little car, painted green,
It’s the fanciest car you’ve seen.
With a “Choo-choo; Toot-toot,”
Hear the whistle blow.
This little train goes chugging home.

This little car; it is grey,
It takes you places far away.
With a “Choo-choo; Toot-toot,”
Hear the whistle blow.
This little train goes chugging home.

This caboose; it is red,
It will take you home to bed.
With a “Choo-choo; Toot-toot,”
Hear the whistle blow.
This little train goes chugging home.

Action Songs:
“Chugg-A-Lugg-A-Choo-Choo” by Johnette Downing
“Driving in My Car” by Ralph’s World
“The Airplane Song” by Laurie Berkner

Fingerplays:

If I Were...
If I were an airplane,
I would fly up in the sky.
[hold out arms; then pretend to fly]
If I were a tricycle,
I would wave as I went by.
                [pedal with legs; then wave]
If I were a dump truck,
I would dump my heavy load.
[bend elbow and put hand on shoulder; then let hand fall]
But if I were a car or bus,
I’d roll on down the road.
                [roll hands over each other]
If I were a choo-choo train,
Along the tracks I’d chug.
[put hands close to sides; then push and pull with arms]
And if I were a tractor,
I would have a big hole dug.
                [scoop with hands]
If I were a helicopter,
I’d sing a whirly tune.
[spin hands over head]
But if I were a rocket ship,
I’d blast off to the moon!
[place palms together and hold close to chest; then shoot hands upward]

The Choo-Choo Train
This is a choo-choo train,
[bend arms at elbows]
Puffing down the track.
                [sway side to side]
Now it's going forward;
[move arms forward]
Now it's going back.
[move arms backward]
Now the bell is ringing,
[pull bell cord with closed fist]
Now the whistle blows.
[whistle]
What a lot of noise it makes,
[cover ears with hands]
Everywhere it goes!

In the Car
Riding, riding in the car,
                [pretend to drive]
Driving near and driving far.
We always buckle our seat belts just so,
Start the engine and off we go!
                [pretend to turn key]

The Airplane
The airplane has great big wings;
                [hold arms out to sides]
Its propeller spins and sings.
                [spin]
The airplane goes up;
                [lift arms up]
The airplane goes down.
                [lower arms down]
The airplane flies high all over town!
                [pretend to fly]
