Sunscreen

Concept: Ultraviolet Radiation
Ultraviolet radiation is the part of the electromagnetic spectrum where wavelengths are just shorter than those of ordinary, visible light but longer than those of x-rays. UV radiation can burn the skin and cause skin cancer.

Ingredients:
      ·         1 cup Lotion
      ·         2 tbl. Zinc Oxide (Non-Nano)
      ·         Glass Jars
      ·         Masks

 Demonstration:
      ·         Pour 1 cup of lotion into the glass jar.
      ·         Wearing a mask, add 2 tablespoons of zinc oxide to the jar.
      ·         Mix the lotion and the zinc oxide together.

Experiment:
·         How could you formulate sunscreen with a higher SPF?
·         How could you formulate sunscreen with a lower SPF?

Observations:
Zinc oxide is a mineral used as a physical sunscreen or sunblock. Zinc oxide creates a layer of protection over the skin and forms a barrier from the harmful rays of the sun. Its reflective properties scatter damaging UV rays.
