Rainy Day

Read Alouds:
Ella, of Course! by Sarah Weeks
The Thingamabob by Il Sung Na
Rainbow of My Own by Don Freeman

Flannel Boards:

Five Little Raindrops
Five little raindrops plopping on the floor,
One plopped away, and then there were four.
Four little raindrops dripping on the trees,
One dripped away, and then there were three.
Three little raindrops splashing on my shoe,
One splashed away, and then there were two.
Two little raindrops starting to run,
One ran off, and then there was one.
One little raindrop drying in the sun,
It dried all up, and then there were none!

Umbrella & Raindrops Counting Set

Rainbow Colors
Six little markers all standing in a line.
They said, "Let's draw a picture and make it mighty fine!"
RED jumped for joy as he leaped across the sky.
ORANGE jumped up too, but not quite so high.
Next came
YELLOW as bright as the sun.
GREEN was excited as he started to run.
BLUE followed boldly, then looked all around.
PURPLE came last, nearly touching the ground.
"Isn't this lovely?" the markers exclaimed.
"We've made a rainbow without any rain!”

Action Songs:
“Muddy Water Puddle” by Hap Palmer
“Color Me a Rainbow” by Jay Jay the Jet Plane

Fingerplays:

Rain
Rain on the housetops,
[make a pointed roof with hands]
And rain on the trees.
[wiggle fingers up high]
Rain on the green grass,
[wiggle fingers down to floor and out wide]
But not on me!
[circle arms over head to make an umbrella]

Eensy Weensy Spider
The eensy weensy spider
[climb opposite thumbs and index fingers upwards]
Went up the water spout.
Down came the rain
[sweep arms down and out]
And washed the spider out.
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain.
[form circle over head with arms]
Now the eensy weensy spider
[climb opposite thumbs and index fingers upwards]
Went up the spout again.

Great Big Rainbow
There's a great, big rainbow
[draw a rainbow with index finger]
In the sky,
With pretty colors
Way up high.
[point up to the sky]
When it starts to rain
[flutter fingers downward]
And the sun comes out,
[make round circle with arms above head]
A beautiful rainbow
Will pop out!
[open closed fists]

You Can Be a Rainbow
I woke up this morning,
What did I see
Way up in the sky?
I saw a pretty rainbow smiling down on me,
Higher than the birds can fly.
You can be a rainbow if you try,
Wave your colors high!
[wave wrist ribbons in the air]
Red and yellow and purple and blue.
You know that you can be a rainbow too.
